The American actor Luke Perry has died following a stroke suffered last week. He was 52 years old.

Reports suggest that the former Beverley Hills, 90210 star died at St. Joseph's Hospital in Burbank, California on Monday morning.

Perry was taken to hospital last Wednesday morning following the huge stroke at his home in Sherman Oaks, California.

His death was reported by Entertainment Tonight producer Brendon Geoffrion, who tweeted: "Luke Perry passed away today in Los Angeles after suffering a massive stroke, ET has learned.

"He was surrounded by his children Jack and Sophie, fiancé Wendy Madison Bauer, ex-wife Minnie Sharp, mother Ann Bennett, step-father Steve Bennett, brother Tom Perry, sister Amy Coder."

Since then, his publicist, Arnold Robinson, has released a statement that - as well as confirming the news - said: "The family appreciates the outpouring of support and prayers that have been extended to Luke from around the world, and respectfully request privacy in this time of great mourning.

"No further details will be released at this time,"

Born in Ohio in 1966, Perry moved to Los Angeles to pursue his career in acting at a relatively young age.

He was best known for his starring role as Dylan McKay in the teen drama Beverley Hills, 90210. He had more recently been starring in Riverdale as Fred Andrews, the father of character Archie.

It is thought that he was filming scenes for the show shortly before his admittance to hospital in Los Angeles.

Perry will also appear posthumously in Quentin Tarantino's Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, which is due out on 26 July 2019.

Perry reportedly passed away at St. Joseph's Hospital in Burbank, California.

After his stroke, it was reported that Perry had been placed into a medical coma to offer him the best chance of making a full recovery. However, his representative, Arnold Robinson, then told the Mirror: "He is not in a coma."

The last that was heard was that he was 'currently sedated and under observation at the hospital'.

However, TMZ has since reported that the damage to his brain was simply too much for him to recover.

RIP Luke Perry.
