Channel 5's new three-part documentary, Stalked: Murder In Slow Motion, is set to be one of the most chilling series on television but will tackle an important issue.

The programme, which kicks off with an hour-long episode tonight, tells the true stories of women who were stalked and killed by their former partners.

A synopsis tells viewers: "More than a million people in Britain are the victims of stalking every year.

"In this chilling documentary series, close friends and family of young women killed by their stalker ex-partners tell the stories first-hand of how romance turned to obsession, jealousy and a campaign of harassment that ended in brutal murder."

Tonight's episode retells the story of 23-year-old Molly McLaren through the recollections of her closest friends, with narration from soap star Kym Marsh.

Aspiring personal trainer Molly died in a 'frenzied' attack at the Dockside shopping centre in Chatham, Kent, on 29 June 2017 after visiting Pure Gym.

Joshua Stimpson, who she met in November 2016, was jailed for her murder in February 2018. Molly dated Stimpson for seven months, choosing to end the relationship two weeks before her killed her.

Following their break-up, Stimpson posted false allegations about Molly on social media before stalking her in the days leading up to her death.

Stimpson had a history of stalking ex-girlfriends, and police warned him twice to stay away from Molly after she reported the social media posts.

Stimpson was found guilty of her murder.

Bystander Benjamin Morton tried to pull Stimpson away from Molly as he attacked her in her car but she was pronounced dead at the scene.

Amy Lee, co-founder of the Molly McLaren Foundation and Molly's best friend, took part in the documentary on behalf of the victim's family.

Amy told Kent Online: "We decided to take part in the documentary in the hope that we could raise better awareness of cyber stalking and to highlight the dangers associated with it.

"With the rapid growth of technology there are some serious legislation changes that are needed to keep people safe and we hope that by highlighting those very dangers, we can encourage more people to support them."

Next week's episode will tell the story of 20-year-old Hollie Gazzard, who was murdered by her abusive and controlling ex-boyfriend in front of customers in her hair salon in 2014.

Stalked: Murder In Slow Motion airs on Tuesday 5 February at 10pm on Channel 5.
