Actor Christopher McDonald was caught by police drunk driving and, according to TMZ, and reportedly attempted to escape arrest by telling them he appeared in Happy Gilmore.

The 62-year-old was apparently driving his silver Porsche in the Lake Arrowhead area Saturday night when he lost control and crashed into a gas meter.

He was then taken into custody to sober up and will be released without bail.

It comes after McDonald was arrested for driving under the influence in North Carolina in 2013.

The actor is currently filming horror move Abruptio, taking on the role as Police Chief Richter. However, he is probably best known for playing Shooter McGavin, Adam Sandler's main golfing rival in the 1996 film Happy Gilmore.

Although apparently the cops weren't as big a fans of the movie as he might have hoped.

The full facts around the arrest are yet to emerge, but in 2013 he blew .15 - almost double the legal limit - after he'd spent the evening drinking with some fans.

Earlier this year, after reportedly 'cleaning up his life' McDonald gave some advice to Tiger Woods who had been arrested in May for a DUI in Florida.

"I went through it myself, I got off. He'll get off." he told TMZ. "He's been a hero of mine and a hero of America for a long time. One of the greatest golfers ever."

Among this credits, McDonald counts: Grease 2, Breakin', Where the Boys Are '84, The Boys Next Door, Thelma & Louise, Grumpy Old Men and Flubber.
