It has been years since Hollywood legend Clint Eastwood last starred in a film.

But the time has come for the veteran actor to the the role as the leading man once again, as the trailer for his latest film has finally been released.

The Mule sees the 88-year-old star play an unassuming old timer who gets caught in drug trafficking.

A police officer appears behind him to see what he's doing. Eastwood's character makes a few jokes and seems to have fooled the cop, but then the sniffer dog begins to bark.

It doesn't look good for old Earl.

But there is more to the story than just about drugs and throughout the teaser there are hints at deeper issues that Eastwood's character is dealing with, such as the foreclosure sign we see stood outside his house.

The trailer then cuts to Earl diving along a highway, as he talks cryptically about how he has ended up in the middle of a multi-million dollar drug bust.

He says: "Family is the most important thing. Don't do what I did. I put work in front of family."

We then see several flashbacks of his wife an his daughter.

He admits: "I was a terrible father, I was a terrible husband."

As well as Clint 'make my day' Eastwood, this tense drama boasts an all-star cast including, Bradley Cooper as as DEA agent on the trail of the elderly drug runner, Laurence Fishburne, and Dianne West.

Estwood's daughter Alison has taken the role of Earl's daughter Iris.

The trailer ends with Earl appearing to look for redemption.

He says: "I didn't deserve forgiveness. This is the last one. So help me God.'"

The film is based on the story of true life smuggler Leo Sharp, a World War Two veteran, who smuggled more than a ton of drugs, worth $3 million, into the US, with reports suggesting that he was paid $1 million in 2010 alone.

He was finally rumbled during a routine traffic stop, when police discovered around 200lbs of cocaine in his car.

The Mule is set to be released on December 14.
