Michael Jai White Explains Gambol's Ambiguous Death Scene In 'The Dark Knight'

Can you believe it's been a decade since the release of The Dark Knight?

Hailed by many as the best superhero movie ever made, Christopher Nolan's classic second installment in his Batman series remains one of the most influential films of our time.

That said, we still can't quite get our heads around Gambol's death - and it seems the guy who played the role, Michael Jai White, was left bemused too.

Warner Bros.

Reflecting on the movie during the run-up to its 10-year anniversary, White revealed that his untimely death at the hands of The Joker (Heath Ledger) wasn't in the original script, and that he didn't know about it until the film's premiere.

"The character wasn't supposed to be gone," he told the Hollywood Reporter.

"That is something that happened in editing later. You don't see mistakes I a movie of that magnitude. When you see something that is somewhat a mistake or not clarified, there is always something behind that."

"I think that people can tell by the strange cut that I never shot a death scene," he added.

In case you've forgotten the scene, let us jog your memory with a swift recap: Gambol (White) puts a bounty on The Joker (Ledger) after he steals his gang's money and brazenly crashes a meeting.

A while later, when The Joker is brought to Gambol in a body bag, Gambol - believing The Joker is dead - gets ready to hand over the $500,000 reward money.

However it quickly transpires that the whole situation has been a hoax when The Joker springs into action, killing two of Gambol's men before sticking a blade into Gambol's mouth.

The Joker then explains to Gambol how he got his scars in that famous "Why so serious?" monologue, and then we see Gambol fall to the ground, never to be seen again - leaving everybody confused for a decade.

Confusing, yes - but White told the Hollywood Reporter that he understands the reasons behind the cut.

"There were other plans to do stuff with that character and some things that were cut out. I think it's because of unfortunately losing Heath Ledger," he continued.

"It was the kind of thing where they had deeper intentions for Gambol. it was a character who was written for future use, I think."

Actor Heath Ledger, who played The Joker in arguably his career-defining role, tragically passed away on 22 January 2008 from an accidental prescribed drug overdose. He was 28 years old.

His death devastated the rest of the cast and led to a number of changes to the remainder of the film.
