Get in. Shrek is coming back to our screens!

It's been seven long years since the last Shrek film was released. In 2010, Shrek Forever After was the final chapter in the series...or so we thought.

The movie which features the green ogre, voiced by Mike Myers, and his wife, Fiona (Cameron Diaz), plus his companions Donkey (Eddie Murphy) and Puss In Boots (Antonio Banderas) has been a huge hit with kids and adults alike.

While talking about his new movie, The Boss Baby, screenwriter Michael McCullers told The Hollywood Reporter that a fifth instalment is in the wings.

"Shrek Five is being developed," he said. "I finished that script, which I really, really, really love.

"It's really personal to me. It's got a pretty big reinvention behind it that I guess I can't reveal."

You cannot tease us like that, Michael.

"Since DreamWorks was sold to Universal in that time for over $3billion [£2.4bn], I imagine they're particularly interested in it stepping up," he continued. "And actually figuring out the future of the franchise in that way on the corporate level.

"Reinvention was sort of called for. There's been four movies and a lot of material, so the characters are pretty beloved and they're great characters, but you also have to think of a pretty new take at that point."

It sounds like an ambitious move, many movies in the past, that have gone a remake, haven't always come off. Are they banking on a family classic remaining just that?

Eddie Murphy has already indicated that he is on board. He told CinemaBlend about returning: "They took a nice long break," he said. "The next Shrek...I think Jeffrey [Katzenburg, producer] told me 2019? 2019 or 2020, it will be ready. But they've got a good script, they wrote a nice good script."

Eddie also told Collider that money is what talks when it comes to deciding on a fifth Shrek film.

"Anything that's been as successful as Shrek, anything that people really like, they're always going to make those movies," he added.

"They don't stop making those types of movies until the audience says 'no more!'"

And, so far, we're not saying that about Shrek.

That's great news, especially for a man who has been out of the limelight a lot recently. He's been enjoying a break away from the screen.

It'll also be a project for Antonio Banderas to get his teeth stuck into. He revealed that at the beginning of 2017 he suffered a heart attack.

Although not serious, Banderas had told The Sun that he was enjoying nature in his recovery.

Waiting for the new Shrek be like...
