The trailer for the much-anticipated fifth series of BBC cop thriller Luther has finally been released and you will want to watch until the end.

Die hard fans of the drama have been waiting three long years for the return of the brooding DCI John Luther to our TV screens, but the wait is almost over.

The clip shows Luther back again and - accompanied by a new partner - on the trail of another deranged killer on a murderous spree across London.

Flashes show past characters, including East End villain George Cornelius, return for the fifth series, but the main take away from the clip is the teased shock return of murderer and love interest Alice Morgan, who Luther - and fans - believed to be dead at the end of the last series.

Mind. Blown.

According to producers of the show, the new four-part series the tormented detective will once again find himself delving into the 'deepest depths of human depravity'.

The synopsis says: "While the monstrous and seemingly indiscriminate killings become ever more audacious and public, Luther and new recruit DS Catherine Halliday played by Wunmi Mosaku are confounded by a complex tangle of leads and misdirection that seems designed to protect an untouchable corruption.

"But even as the case brings him closer than ever to the true face of evil, a reluctant Luther is forced to confront the unburied demons of his own recent past.

"Striding back into the line of fire, he must choose who to protect and who to sacrifice.

"Whatever his next move, it will have devastating consequences for those around him - and change John Luther forever."

Speaking to the BBC back when the fifth series was announced, writer Neil Cross said: "We missed John Luther. We missed some old friends. And we wanted to make the biggest, scariest, darkest, most thrilling series of Luther there's ever been. So that's what we've come back to do."

And just when you thought things couldn't get any better, the show's star, Idris Elba, told Empire that he will be donning the red tie and woollen jacket once again.

He said: "This season is not the en. But there are some real changes that will happen."

The world's sexiest man didn't confirm whether it would be a sixth series or a feature length film, but that doesn't really matter, what matters is that Luther will be back and that is good enough.

Are you excited? I'm excited.
