It seems like everyday we find out that the things we like are not good for us.

There are some things that are obviously not good for us, cigarettes, not sleeping, living off crisps - but everything these days seems to be linked with something truly terrifying.

But don't despair - one of our favourite things in the whole world will not only not give you cancer... but it might actually make you healthier. Hurrah.

According to a new study by researchers at Stanford University, there may be a way to stop the process that triggers age-related inflammations.

And it can be found in a cup of coffee.

What is 'age-related inflammation' anyway? Well, it's pretty serious stuff including cardiovascular disease, diabetes, cancer and Alzheimer's disease. Things you definitely don't want.

Dr David Furham, the co-author of the study which looked at 100 people over many years at Stanford University said: "It's well-known that caffeine intake is associated with longevity.

"Many studies have shown this association. We've found a possible reason for why this may be so.

"Our findings show that an underlying inflammatory process, which is associated with aging, is not only driving cardiovascular disease but is, in turn, driven by molecular events that we may be able to target and combat."

This inflammatory mechanism was found to be inactive in some participants who regularly consumed caffeinated products.

So coffee might actually make you live longer? Suddenly I feel less bad about spending £3 on a latte a day. It's not a waste of money, it is a health drink.

"Something many people drink - and actually like to drink - might have a direct benefit came as a surprise to us," said Dr Mark Davis, a professor of microbiology and immunology.

Of course, there are a lot of people who are very sensitive to caffeine in coffee, so you have to be careful not to drink too much as it can have a negative effect.

How much coffee can you drink? Well, experts say that you can drink up to 400mg of caffeine a day. That's roughly the amount of caffeine in four cups of brewed coffee. Excellent.
