The massive bit of meat will be on shelves for a limited time only

If you're not doing Veganuary, or if you are but think you'll be just about ready to give up by Thursday, then look no further than the Big Daddy rump steak.

Aldi's 16oz 21 day matured meaty behemoth is returning to the supermarket's shelves on 24 January and is priced at £4.99 - which really is a bargain when you consider how much almost half a kilo of steak would cost you in a restaurant.

For meat-lovers who are abstaining throughout January, the steak could be their downfall. Not only does it represent carnivorous heaven, but it is also around for a limited time only, meaning waiting until February could result in missing out altogether. So it's going to take every oz of discipline not to give in.

How long the meat will be on offer is unclear. The German supermarket sporadically reintroduces the huge steaks and then, as suddenly as they arrive, they disappear once again. Perhaps there are a limited number of mega cows capable of producing such hefty cuts?

The Aldi Bigg Daddy rump steak is a big old bit of meat.

When they were reintroduced in the summer, the supermarket released a statement that read: "Back by popular demand, the 16oz 'Big Daddy' Extra Thick Rump Steak is returning! The 21-day matured steak costs only £4.99 and is best cooked over a very high heat, with a generous resting time.

"But, if you want to get your teeth into one of Aldi's BIG BBQ offers, you'll have to be quick as once it's gone, it's gone!"

While the 'BIG BBQ offers' are of course no more, the haste needed to get your hands on one of these bad boys will likely be the same. Indeed, these steaks are very rare... If you do manage to get one, well done.

Aldi's Tony Baines said the steak represented a way of treating yourself and saving.

He said: "This premium British rump steak is an example of Aldi's commitment to offering quality, locally-sourced products at amazing low prices, once again allowing customers to make substantial savings on luxury products without compromise."

So perhaps the best plan of attack is to head down to Aldi on Thursday and get a hold of one of these beasts. Then you could scoff it down if you fancy, or freeze it if you are doing Veganuary. You could even freeze two for a Valentine' Day meal.

Alternatively, if you really want to push the boat out, you and your love can both have steak for £20 with Wetherspoon's Valentine's Day meal for two.
