Gin is the perfect summertime tipple, especially given that these days we're treated to all kinds of garish colours and unusual flavours. Simply grab that giant Spanish copa glass, pop in a sprig of thyme, some juniper berries and a grapefruit wedge and you honestly feel like the fanciest bastard on the BBQ scene.

But Asda's latest ace card might just be a step up from the rest, because the supermarket's new range of gins are not only bright and colourful (which in itself would be enough to impress everyone at your next soiree), but they're also inspired by the classic sweets of your childhood - we're talking sherbet lemon, parma violets and pear drops.

But it gets better still, as it's not just the candy-inspired flavours that will be a talking point.

While the lemon sherbet and pear drop gins have a shimmery appearance, the parma violet also transforms from a deep purple to light pink when mixed with tonic water.

The expert team at Asda also advise that the mixers are just as important as the spirits they're teamed with, so they've also worked with the supermarket has worked with mixologists to mastermind a new line of equally special flavours.

Choose between Rhubarb Soda with a Hint of Cardamom, Lemonade with Sicilian Lemon, Soda Water with a hint of Sicilian Lemon, Blood Orange & Rosemary Tonic Water and Pink Grapefruit & Peach Tonic Water. You'll even find new 'Gin Wheels' in store to guide you to the perfect pairing.

God, just think of your mates' faces when you whip all this out next time they're round - they're not gonna know what's hit them as they sip on their stubbies of lager.

Launching in store and online today as part of Asda's Extra Special range, the tipples retail at £18 per 70cl bottle and have an alcohol by volume (ABV) content of 40 per cent.

Ed Sowerby, ASDA spirits product manager, said: "Novelty, quality gins have become a summer must-have for customers looking to entertain with flair and flavour.

"Working closely with our suppliers, we've created a range of gins which are both glitzy and gorgeous to look at, but also deliver popular flavours the nation knows and loves."

Now we just need some of that elusive sunshine to complete the package...
