Mum Told Vegan Sausage Roll 'Too Posh' For Her Local Greggs

Mum Told Vegan Sausage Roll 'Too Posh' For Her Local Greggs

Never before has a sausage roll made quite so many headlines

Fancy being told that a kind of sausage roll is too posh for the area you call home.

But this is exactly what happened when mum-of-one, Jean Johnson, tried to pick up a vegan sausage roll from her local Greggs in Kirkby, Merseyside.

The 54-year-old said she was desperate to try one after seeing them on This Morning, but when she got to the bakery on St Chads Parade she was told they were 'too posh' for the area.

Speaking to the Liverpool Echo, she said: "I thought I'd try one of these new sausage rolls, but they had none.

"When I asked if they had run out, I was told that they had never sold them, because they are too posh for Kirkby."

Jean went on to describe it as a 'post code lottery for sausage rolls', which is quite an interesting concept.

But the bakery has since denied that such a lottery exists, explaining that it hopes to have the sausage roll on sale in every store in the future.

Who knew a sausage roll could be so divisive?

Speaking to the Liverpool Echo, a spokesman said: "Since its release, the vegan sausage roll has been very successful. It was released in 950 stores in Britain as a pilot phase for the product.

"It's not because it's too posh for Kirkby, we intend on distributing it across all stores, including Kirkby, as soon as possible."

So don't worry Jean, your time will come.

But to be fair to her, she is not the first to get all worked up about the vegan sausage roll. Piers Morgan tried one on Good Morning Britain and ended up spitting it in the bin, having previously tweeted Greggs saying: "Nobody was waiting for a vegan bloody sausage, you PC-ravaged clowns."

Another bloke sparked outrage on social media after he filmed himself buying one of the sausage rolls before walking out the door and chucking it straight in the bin... The top comment on the video echoed the sentiment of the majority: "Homeless person would have been grateful for that, shameful behaviour really."

But while the likes of Piers and waste man (see what I did there) were vehemently opposed to the vegan sausage roll, others (like Jean) have been desperate to try it. So much so, that some people started to try and flog them on eBay, with one put up for the asking price of £12.50.

Let's hope for the sake of humanity that vegan sausage roll did not get sold.
