Sausage rolls - we love 'em here in the UK. Feeling peckish? Snacking to alleviate general boredom? Chances are you've got a hankering for some meat wrapped in puff pastry. Bit of sauce? Why thank you. Another sausage roll? May as well - already ruined the diet here.

Well, I've got bad news for you, LADs. Might want to sit down before you read this - because it pains me and my hunger pangs to report that sausage rolls are being recalled across the UK due to suspected metal contamination.

Yes, you read that right. Deep breaths, everyone. We could be in for a temporary sausage roll shortage, as everyone's favourite pastry-based foodstuff - and a few pies, pasties and slices to boot - have been recalled by Tesco, Aldi and Nisa.

I hope you have someone to help you cope at this difficult time. I know, it's a shock for all of us. After all, according to stats compiled for the 2012 budget, Greggs alone sells 2.5 million sausage rolls per week, so their popularity certainly isn't in doubt.

Along with manufacturers Walls and Millers, the supermarket chains look to have been hit with the shock news after some of their own-brand products - made by the Addo Food Group - were suspected to have been contaminated.

According to the Food Standards Agency (FSA), the product recalls had been issued thanks to 'potential contamination with small pieces of metal wire'.

Eurgh. I mean, to be fair, the last thing you want is to be munching away on a delicious, hot sausage roll, only to wrap your gnashers around a piece of wire. So what should we avoid?

Helpfully, the FSA continued: "The products affected are own-branded products produced for Aldi, Nisa and Tesco and branded products produced under the Walls and Millers brands.

"If you have bought any of the products above, do not eat them."

Products with use-by dates between 4-12 June could be affected, and a total of 59 products have been removed from the shelves, including Aldi minced steak and onion slices, Millers chicken tikka slices and Tesco chicken and gravy shortcrust pies.

You can find the full list of recalled products over at the FSA website - in the meantime, Aldi confirmed it had identified 'the possible presence of small pieces of metal' in six of its own-branded pastry products.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, the supermarket has also advised customers to return affected products to the nearest store.

The list on the FSA website reveals that Tesco has been affected most (well, apart from you and me, obviously), with a total of 22 products recalled.

And don't worry about being out of pocket, either - the BBC reports that all products can be returned without receipts for a full refund.

So there's not much left for us to to do in the meantime but sit huddled in a corner, crying gently to ourselves as we rock disconsolately back and forth, fearing for a world devoid of the nation's favourite snack.

Or, you know, you could just go to Greggs or something.
