Vegans Angered As Pub Chain Charges £28 For 'Cauliflower Steaks'

Vegans Angered As Pub Chain Charges £28 For 'Cauliflower Steaks'

The price tag is the same for two Aberdeen Angus sirloin steaks

Being vegan is harder than not being vegan.

Even if you don't find it particularly difficult going without meat, eggs, dairy and so on, you've still got to check labels for traces of the stuff - no doubt scanning for fishy agents on your third bottle of wine is a pain in the arse.

As such, the last thing vegans need is to be charged £28 for a fucking cauliflower.

Young's pub chain has been accused of profiteering after a picture of their advertisement for 28 quid cauliflower steaks went viral.

The blackboard, shared on Twitter, reads: "Two Aberdeen Angus sirloin steaks for £28, or two roasted cauliflower steaks for £28."

Jamie Klinger shared the picture:

Indeed, the people of the Twittersphere seemed to concur with her sentiment:

One person said: "It's a MASSIVE profit spinner. I think the sign is actually taking the mic [out] of vegans."

Another wrote: "Restaurants now doing all they can to exploit vegans for as much as they can squeeze out of them. All for produce that costs pence. Unfettered capitalism and mass food commoditisation in full flow."

And another added: "This is one of the most infuriating things about being veggie/vegan! I understand that you have to pay for the chef, waiting staff and overheads but how in chipping tits can cauliflower cost the same as steak!"

This is not the face of someone who has been charged £28 for a cauliflower.

The offer was initially made available at all 148 Young's pubs across the south east of England throughout January.

So what exactly could diners expect to get for their money?

Well, if they opted for the meaty option, they'd be served up two 6oz sirloin sirloin steaks with triple-cooked chips and watercress. Alternatively, they could have two roasted slices of cauliflower with an oil drizzle, mushrooms, tomatoes and mash.

Tough call.

For context, you can buy a whole cauliflower from Asda for a pound.

But the pub chain defended the lofty price, claiming the cauliflower dish is of 'premium quality'.

Responding to a query on Twitter regarding the pricing, Young's Pubs said: "Both dishes are of premium quality, the vegan dish is an alternative for those who do not eat meat.

"We also have other options available on our main menus."

So was the pub hoping this would slip under the radar, or was the controversial cauliflower a deliberate headline grabber?

Well, it seems it may have been the former, as the cauliflower option has now been taken off the menu.

A spokesman told LADbible: "We have a great value steak promotion running through January offering customers two 6oz sirloin steaks for £28.

"We always seek to offer our customers a range of vegetarian and vegan dishes and wanted to ensure that choice extended to this offer.

"Having listened to the feedback, we have removed the cauliflower dish and will remain committed to offering value and choice across our menu for all our customers."
