A woman has shared an innovative way to bag a cheap takeaway while also helping reduce food waste - saying she managed to get a Chinese takeaway haul for less than £4 thanks to a cunning app.

Posting pictures of her bargain meal, Laura Davidson explained she had used an app called Too Good To Go Go, which launched in the UK back in June 2016 as a means of combatting food waste in restaurants.

The premise is simple: you download the app, where local restaurants and cafes in your area have listed meals they have going spare, along with the price and the estimated time you need to collect it.

"There's an app called TooGoodToGo and you get food at the end of the night from places for super cheap!" she explained on Twitter.

Laura gave an example of how she used the app at a Chinese buffet in Glasgow, saying you simply bring your own tub (another nice touch) and take what you want, and that the deal is available 'every night for £3.59'.

The meals on offer vary from restaurant to restaurant and depend on what's left over each day, but you're just given a general idea of what you can expect to be picking up, be it pizza, curry, breakfast food - you name it.

It's also available in many countries across Europe, not just the UK.

"Customers order a 'magic bag' of surplus food at a discount on retail price and then collect it from the stores in question in a pre-set collection window," the Too Good To Go website explains.

"Each store profile contains a guide to the kind of food the store specialises in so you can obtain a rough idea but what this actually entails will vary dramatically from day to day depending on what the stores have leftover."

Other Twitter users were instantly sold on Laura's tip-off, with one person commenting: "OMG. That's awesome. Food wastage is one thing about life that makes me super annoyed."

Another said: "This is dope and prevents food waste!"

Someone else wrote: "Literally the best thing in life."

The app is also available in many places across Europe.

A fourth added: "Love this app, not just end of the night though you can get breakfast and lunch."

Another person said they liked the sound of the app, while another said they had it 'downloaded and ready'.

Others also suggested it could be used as a means of helping homeless communities in the future, with one writing: "You can take as much food as you want for £4, it's a step in the right direction at least. They should operate a 'buy a meal' service so you can order for a random homeless person who asks for food in there."

Cheers for the heads up, Laura!
