You Can Now Get Advent Calendars Featuring Beer And Pork Scratchings

When we were kids, advent calendars used to be pretty basic. Sure, maybe your parents splashed out on a Lindt one or something, but usually it just involved a crap joke and a tiny square of slightly tasteless chocolate moulded into something claiming to be a Christmas tree or a reindeer - every day for 25 days.

Not these days. Now we're seriously spoilt when it comes to advent calendars, with ones that come with booze, ones that come with Pringles, ones with Lego... there's just about anything your heart desires.

And that now also includes the almighty double whammy of beer and pork scratchings, a combo you'll no doubt be au fait with after many post-work boozing seshes at your local.

The limited edition calendars feature pork crackling by Snaffling Pig and beer from Meantime Brewery - with 12 bags of double-cooked pork snacks and a dozen 330ml bottles of beer to wash them down with.

Beer-wise, there's a selection of Meantime's London Lager, London Pale Ale and Yakima Red, meaning you can work your way through the range throughout the festive period. Mind you, I know most of the fun of an advent calendar is waking up and reaching straight for the treat, but maybe save the beer for when you've got home from work, eh?

The pork, on the other hand, will make the perfect breakfast as you run out of the door to catch the bus...

The calendars are available at Selfridges and cost £65, but if you think the pork and beer combo is a bit excessive (have a word with yourself, if so), then you can also go for slightly cheaper versions that just have the edible goodies inside.

Snaffling Pig also has a Merry Piggin' Christmas Pork Crackling Advent Calendar, which has 24 mini bags of pork crackling. They come in six flavours - Pigs in Blankets, Low & Slow BBQ, Black Pepper, Salt 'N' Vinegar, Marvellous Maple and Perfectly Salted - and cost £17.50.

The company's Perfectly Salted Christmas Pork Crackling Advent Calendar, meanwhile, costs just £12.50 and features 24 mini bags of Snaffling Pig's Perfectly Salted pork crackling. Those ones you can get at Sainsbury's.

I did love the advent calendars I had as a young 'un, but I'm glad there are now plenty doing the rounds for us big kids.
