Popular YouTuber TotalBiscuit - real name John Bain - has sadly passed away at the age of 33.

Bain was diagnosed with bowel cancer in 2014 - the following year he told his followers it was terminal but continued to produce videos for his channel, where he was known for reviewing indie titles and pulling apart industry news.

The PC gaming star, who also went by the name The Cynical Brit, had over two million followers on his channel, but announced he would be retiring from YouTube last month after opening up to his fans and revealing that the chemotherapy he'd been receiving was ineffective.

He said that after he had gone he hoped his wife would take over his popular channel. "I fully expect The Co-optional Podcast to go on and I love the thought that once I'm gone, the channels will go on in my absence, hosted by the person who knows me best and has been with me for the better part of my adult life," he said.

"It's been a privilege. Thank you all for letting me into your life and do something so important as to have an impact on how you spend your hard-earned money."

His wife Genna confirmed the sad news on Twitter yesterday as well as sharing a touching poem:

His official account also announced broke the news:

Tributes have poured in from heartbroken fans, fellow YouTubers and gaming experts:

As well as his impressive following on YouTube, Bain was also the top curator on Steam for several years, with 80,000 followers at the time of his death.
