People in England have discovered patient choice which helps find an NHS specialist with shorter waiting times

Alright, let's chat about something called ‘Patient Choice’. Ever heard of it?

Alright, let's chat about something called ‘Patient Choice’. Ever heard of it? If not, no sweat, as we’re here to dish the details on what could be a game changer for you and your loved ones when it comes to healthcare.

Patient Choice is a nifty initiative which gives people more control by allowing them to choose between different hospitals of where they receive specialist NHS care.

This isn’t a new concept, we’ve all had the right to choose for a while now. But many people don’t actually know about it. So, let’s dig a bit deeper into what Patient Choice is, how it works and how it can benefit you and your family.

So, what exactly is Patient Choice?

When you go to see the GP, after assessing your condition, they may suggest you go to see a specialist. If this does happen, you then have the right to choose from a list of hospitals that you could attend.

Whether it’s sorting out dodgy knees or saying goodbye to gallstones, a patient has the right to decide where they get treated based on whatever is most important to them. This could be finding a more convenient location, like somewhere close to work, or being seen quickly. This could be at an NHS or an independent hospital that provides NHS services.

Why should you care?

Well, think about it – not only does this give you, and your loved ones, greater control of your care but it can also ease pressure on the NHS. Patient Choice allows you to choose from a list of options depending on what’s important to you.

Need to be seen as soon as possible? Pick a hospital with the shortest waiting time. Want to keep it local? No problem. You can even punt for a hospital that’s close to friends and family so they can help look after you.

Now, how does it all work?

Following your assessment, if your GP suggests you see a specialist, they can then take you through a range of options depending on what’s most important to you. You can either make a decision right there and then, or the GP practice can make a list available to you. This means you can take some time to think through all the options, and then book it later on the NHS App, online or by calling the national referral helpline.

And, if you’d rather not make the decision yourself, your GP is on hand to recommend a spot for you. Easy peasy.

In a nutshell, Patient Choice is all about giving you the control. It’s about making sure you choose a hospital that works for you.

So, next time you’re chatting with your pals or catching up with your nan, mum or brother, spread the word. You never know when Patient Choice might come in handy for you or someone you care about.
