Model, 7, Who Is Double Amputee Hired By River Island

A seven-year-old model who is a double amputee has been snapped up by River Island to show off its new collection.

Daisy-May Demetree, who had both of her legs amputated when she was just 18-months old, has been picked by the high-street chain to model its new range of girls' sport and dance wear.

The youngster was born with a condition called fibular hemimelia, a birth defect where part or all of the fibular bone in the leg is missing, and as a result had both legs amputated below the knee while she was still a baby.

Now, little Daisy has two prosthetic legs and can be seen modelling activewear on the River Island website.

Daisy, from Birmingham, only started modelling six months ago and has already been a big hit.

Speaking to Barcroft TV, her dad Alex said: "She wants to do what other people can do and that is what inspired her I think. To be able to push on because once she started walking that was it, she was up and away."

He and Daisy's mum Claire say being an amputee doesn't hold her back and that she's not bothered by her unique legs.

Her dad said: "I ask her all the time to be honest about being different, her answer is that she doesn't care, and you know what, that's exactly how I brought her up to be.

"It's good to be different, to stand out and it doesn't faze her, it really doesn't and it is amazing.

"She is inspirational, she is full of energy, nothing will stop her ever in life."

Daisy is signed to Zebedee Management, a modelling agency for diverse models, and Alex says that although modelling wasn't something the family had ever thought about she has taken to it like a duck to water.

"She was definitely born to do something," he added.

"It sounds stupid, and there are thousands of people who don't believe what I say, but she is going to be the most famous double amputee on this planet and I believe that to be true."

A spokesman for River Island told Metro: "We cast our models based on who best fits the brief for the specific activity. For the new RI ACTIVE range for girls wear, we required a model who has lots of energy and who looked great in active wear.

"Daisy-May Demetree fitted this brief perfectly. As well, as having a great, outgoing personality, Daisy-May has a genuine love of all sports."
