Amazing Underground Hotel Built Disused Quarry To Open This Year

It beats the hell out of the Basingstoke Travelodge

When you go to stay in a hotel, you want a comfy room, it needs to be clean, and - if you're really lucky - you'll have a lovely view of the seaside or something.

Well, this hotel near the Chinese city of Shanghai doesn't have that, but it is built right into the side of an underground quarry surrounded by a lake.

Have a look for yourself...

Oh yeah, that'll probably do. It beats the hell out of Torquay seafront any day of the week.

The building was designed by the some of the people that helped to build the famous Burj Al Arab, which describes itself as the world's most luxurious hotel.

That's a decent background to come from. This hotel actually looks more spectacular than the huge sail-shaped building in Dubai.

So, the InterContinental Shanghai Wonderland extends 18 stories, which is nothing by the standards of the skyscrapers of today. That being said, it does have 16 underground floors. There ain't a lot of buildings out there that can claim that.

It also has a huge waterfall that falls down deep into the quarry that it is built into, as well as a green covered 'ground floor' level, which is - obviously - actually the top floor.

The bottom two floors are completely underwater, offering views of the two-storey-deep aquarium that sits at the bottom of the quarry. Under the water there will also be a restaurant and a water sports centre.

When it opens on 1 December it will offer bungee jumping and rock climbing, putting the disused quarry to good use, at least.

The hotel, near the Tianmen Mountain, was supposed to open earlier in the year after a ten-year building period, but now it will finally be open to customers - who presumably will have to have a decent bank balance.

That said, even if it is going to be pricey, they are hoping that it will attract tourists who are interested in saving the environment.

The InterContinental Wonderland has been designed to be as green as possible. In fact, they are even planning to generate their own solar and geothermal power. That's before we arrive at the fact that they've built the hotel into a disused quarry pit to minimise their environmental impact.

Good going, guys.

Anyway, it looks amazing. If you find yourself in the greater Shanghai area with a bulging wallet and a desire to stay somewhere unique, this is probably the hotel for you.
