Lake Michigan Covered In Beautiful Ice Shards As Winter Ice Melts

Lake Michigan Covered In Beautiful Ice Shards As Winter Ice Melts

Spring has sprung in the Great Lake state

After we experienced that fool's summer back in February here in Britain, it finally looked as if spring was here across the UK yesterday. To be fair, after the past few weeks, it's about time.

Over the pond in the USA, it's been even worse. A so-called 'cyclone bomb' has been bringing awful conditions including snow, heavy rain, and extremely high winds to much of North America. However, there are signs that it is relenting.

There are some intriguing and beautiful signs, in fact.

As the weather starts to improve slightly - as it often does at this time of year - the Great Lakes that have been frozen over for much of the winter months start to thaw out. That can create some unusual and impressive effects.

Nice, isn't it?

Take Lake Michigan, for example. As the water melts and moves around underneath the sheet of ice, it pushes large sharp shards up towards the surface. That creates an otherworldly effect that has to be seen to be believed.

This bizarre, ethereal sight can be seen at a few places around the lake, notably from a pier in South Haven. Luckily for us, we've got the pictures to give us the story without having to get a cold face.

Lake Michigan sure is spiky at this time of year.

Whilst this all looks lovely; the US Coast Guard have issued a stark warning to anyone wanting to get close up to the ice.

A Coast Guard representative told MLive.com: "No ice is safe ice especially this time of year,

"The ice is certainly deteriorating and breaking up."

Just a few weeks ago, more than half of the whole of Lake Michigan was completely iced over. To give that a bit of context, it is the fifth largest lake in the world by surface area, covering 58,000 square kilometres (22,000 square miles).

That is a whole load of ice. More than 11,000 square miles, to say the least.

Coast Guards have said to stay back, though.

Anyway, the people of the USA must now be hoping that they'll get a bit of a rest from extreme weather for a bit. It was blowing trucks over in Texas the other day.

Meanwhile, over here in the UK, things are going to be a bit less - shall we say - erratic? Our colonial cousins often like to out-do us when it comes to extreme weather conditions, anyway.

It's supposed to be a lot milder, even with a few spots of sunshine possible across much of the UK towards the end of this week.

As long as it stops hailing. That'd be great.
