Man Who Vowed To Consume Nothing But Beer For Lent Loses Over A Stone

Del Hall has water and coffee at breakfast followed by beers for the rest of the day

Most people give up chocolate, sweets or eating after 5pm for Lent. Some will even decide to go back in to dry-January mode and ditch the booze.

Not Del Hall, though - he simply gave up food. In fact, not only did he give up the thing we kind of need to survive, but he also decided to substitute the grub for beer.

Del, who works at Fifty West Brewing Company in Cincinnati, Ohio, has already lost more than a stone in just a week.

So for 46 days he will drink only an assortment of beers, a plan which is inspired by the fasting rituals of 18th century Bavarian monks.

After starting on Ash Wednesday (6 March), Del has already managed to shed over 15 pounds.

The pounds are dropping.

Speaking on his YouTube channel, he said: "I'm down 15.6 pounds already - that's crazy. This isn't about the weight loss, this is about my journey and about breaking an addiction to food - and about trying to challenge myself and replicate what the Monks did.

"It's still super cool to be able to lose 15.6 pounds. I'm not calling this the 'Beer Fast Diet' or anything like that but it's super cool to see that number on the scales.

"I'm having anywhere from two to five beers a day. I'm not necessarily drinking in the morning, I'm not a breakfast person. So I get up, I have some water, I have a black coffee - no sweetener, no dairy, nothing in it, just black coffee.

"I normally have my first beer some time in the afternoon and I might have one whenever I'm feeling a bit peckish. The majority of the beers I'm drinking are at home. When I get home at night I might have two to three beers at the house and that's pretty much a typical day."

Del only allows himself black, unsweetened coffee or water if he's not drinking beer.

He told the Cincinnati Enquirer: "I feel amazing. I feel like this mental fog has been lifted. Days two and three were pretty rough. I wanted to bash some Taco Bell after a few beers because that's what we do."

The former army veteran is mixing stuff up by drinking a different variety of ales. His lunchtime tipple this week was a chocolate maple and toasted almond stout, with an 8.1 percent ABV.

On his YouTube channel, he added: "Days four and five, the hunger started to subside and then the last two days have been great. Days six and say seven... I mean, I really haven't had any hunger.

"I hope I'm over the hump. When you normally fast, you have a hump where you have hunger and then you have others where you don't. I hope that I'm over that right now - that would be super cool."

As well as losing weight and 'feeling amazing', Del's sense of smell has also improved. Do we really need any more persuading?

BRB, just going to buy a crate.
