The will they / won't they saga around the return of McDonald's Szechuan sauce appears to have finally reached an end, for one day at least.

As you probably know, the first episode of Rick and Morty's third season sparked a global outcry for the return of the dipping sauce, initially released back in 1998 as part of the promotion for Disney's Mulan.

On the show, Rick was so desperate to get hold of the stuff that he tricked an alien into creating a false reality, saying he was willing to do whatever it took to taste it again, even if it meant waiting him 97 years.

But it looks like fans won't have to wait that long, as on 7 October, a limited amount of the sauce will be available at select fast food joints across America.

The sauce is available because McDonald's is releasing its new Buttermilk Crispy Tenders, as well as giving away 1,000 limited-edition, hand numbered, screen-printed posters for the various sauces available alongside them.

On its website, McDonald's says: "Szechuan Sauce fans are typically incredibly motivated, born winners that combine a sweet disposition with a slow burning heat. When these people set goals (or make outright demands), they tend to achieve them.

"Sometimes, their impulsivity can get them into all sorts of hijinks, but their mad genius is their portal out of trouble. They truly put the 'I WANT THAT SZECHUAN SAUCE' in 'Buttermilk Crispy Tenders'."

McDonald's has been riding the Szechuan hype for a while now. Back in July, Dan Harmon, Justin Roiland and their team were sent a bottle of the Dimension C-1998 sauce.

"I personally thought it was a sauce that was trying too hard in a world where with McNuggets sauce, you just want something to taste like honey or like a BBQ sauce," co-creator Dan Harmon told Entertainment Weekly.

"It was sauce that was trying to prove it was different and in doing so it worked harder than a sauce should. It was working too hard to be a sauce!"

Prior to the announcement a petition garnered nearly 40,000 signatures calling for the sauces return, and a guy who found a packet of the original managed to sell it on eBay for $14,700 (£11,500).
