Teen Gives Birth In Hospital Car Park Just 45 Minutes After Realising She Was Pregnant

It's fair to say that things escalated quickly

An 19-year-old has given birth to a healthy baby girl despite not realising that she was pregnant until 45 minutes before her daughter was born.

Emmalouise Leggate went to sleep on 16 July 2018 as she normally would, but when she woke up she noticed that she had a bump on her stomach.

After a dash to the hospital and a decent amount of quick-thinking from her grandmother, she delivered a baby girl in the hospital car park.

The teenager had no idea that she was pregnant, was taking the contraceptive pill at the time, and says that she had a flat stomach until right before she gave birth.

Her daughter, Ciara Louise Lamont, was full term at the time of her birth but had been positioned further towards her mum's back, rather than at the front. That's how she didn't notice that she was pregnant.

Her grandma, 63-year-old Louise Ford, rushed her off to the hospital, but the labour was over so quickly that they never actually made it into the building.

The good news is that the baby - who is now eight months old - was born healthy and weighing 7lbs 12oz on 17 July last year. She is Emmalouise and her partner Sean Lamont's second child following one year old Caoimhe.

Emmalouise, from Glasgow, said: "I was really shocked afterwards. It didn't feel real.

"My nanna was in that much shock that she didn't want to believe it. We were really lucky she was okay.

"I hadn't taken a pregnancy test, I had no symptoms, nothing. Nothing at all.

"The doctors couldn't explain why I didn't have a bump. They just told me that she must have been sitting in my lower back and that it is quite common.

"People tend to find out around their 20-week scan once the baby starts to kick, but Ciara never kicked. I never felt her do it.

"I never had any morning sickness or cravings either, nothing like that.

"At the start [of using the pill] I was bleeding a little bit, but then my periods just stopped altogether so I just thought that it was the pill."

She continued: "I had no bump. I had put on a bit of weight, so my mum was suggesting we go out walking and do different things to burn it off because I kept going on about my weight.

"The weight was across my full body, more in my arms, legs and face than anywhere else. My stomach never grew.

"But I gave birth to Ciara. It was a really quick labour.

"It was quite a neat bump. It was very small and all at the top - I'm guessing she'd just turned."

Naturally, she was quite shocked to discover a baby bump that she didn't have a day earlier. She called her mum, who alerted her grandmother and rushed her off to the hospital.

Her quick actions got them to the hospital almost in time.

Sadly, her grandmother passed away in October, but Ciara has the middle name Louise, in honour of her late great-grandmother.

Despite being overjoyed with her surprise baby, Emmalouise has now given up on taking the pill, opting for the coil instead.

She said: "It was the best thing that could have happened. But we're having no more. No more surprise babies, thank you.

"It's changed the way I think about contraception. I ended up going on the coil just after Ciara. I'm safe just now. I take pregnancy tests nowadays too just in case."
