The bizarre claim comes on the same day Democrats formally submit an article to impeach the President.

The US State Department website has declared Donald Trump's term as President has ended today.

On the biographies section for the outgoing Commander in Chief, the page is completely bare, except for a single inclusion that says: "Donald J. Trump's term ended on 2021-01-11 19:40:41."

According to The Independent, the website has been showing several different times, including 19:49:00 and 19:22:18.

The strange thing about any of those times is that they are all in the future. At the time of writing, it's only the afternoon on the east coast.

Some people on social media have suggested the State Department might use GMT to avoid confusion due to America's different time zones.

LADbible has sought comment from the State Department about whether this is a glitch or whether someone is preparing the webpage for Trump's term as President to end on January 20 when Joe Biden gets inaugurated.

The mysterious incident on the State Department website has appeared on the same day that Democrats formally lodged an article of impeachment against Trump.

David Cicilline, the representative for Rhode Island's first district, tweeted: "Just landed in Washington where I will be introducing an article of impeachment against the President for Incitement of Insurrection at 11am."

Then, Congressman Ted Lieu shared a picture of the document, writing: "The Article of Impeachment: Incitement to Insurrection, drafted by Rep @davidcicilline, @RepRaskin, me & @HouseJudiciary staff, has now been formally introduced at the House pro forma session today."

Trump has been charged with a single impeachment article: "Incitement of insurrection."

The impeachment proceedings could stand a better chance of success this time around as the Democrats hold a majority within the house.

Furthermore, while they may only take a matter of days from Trump's presidency, they could also preclude him from running for public office in future.

Trump is the only US President in history to be the subject of two impeachments. A vote on whether to impeach Trump could be heard by the middle of this week.

This latest move to impeach Trump comes after the House Speaker Nancy Pelosi issued an ultimatum to Vice President Mike Pence asking him to invoke the 25th Amendment of the US Constitution in order to remove Trump and become president himself.

The 25th Amendment allows for the president to be removed if he is deemed 'unfit' to hold office.

Pelosi asked Pence to invoke the amendment today, or the Democrats would introduce impeachment proceedings.

In a letter to lawmakers on Sunday, Pelosi wrote: "The horror of the ongoing assault on our democracy perpetrated by this president is intensified and so is the immediate need for action."

Pence is thought to oppose the invocation of the 25th Amendment.
