"Despite receiving successful treatment for oesophageal cancer recently, Chas suffered organ failure and passed away peacefully in his sleep in the early hours of this morning."

On the duo's website, bandmate Dave Peacock thanked fans for their 'fantastic support and goodwill at this difficult time'.

The BBC reported how Chas and Dave enjoyed the height of their fame in the 1970s and 1980s with hits such as 'Rabbit' and 'Snooker Loopy'.

The rock-pop duo developed a musical style - rockney - which was a combination of rockn'roll with Cockney patter, music hall, boogie-woogie and pub singalongs.

Speaking about their invention, in 2008 Chas told the Lancashire Post: "I was singing in an American accent. I thought, 'You're being a fraud, you should sing in your own accent,' and that's when I started to work on the idea."

The pair performed four FA Cup final songs for Tottenham Hotspur FC who have paid tribute to Chas:

Fans of the duo and Tottenham Hotspur have responded to the news with one saying: "So sad to hear this terrible news. I feel honoured to have spent many happy times with Chas, especially making the 4 Spurs Cup Final records and joining him (& Dave and Mick) on TV shows like TOTP and Blue Peter. But his legacy will stretch far beyond football songs."

Another added: "Truly devastating news, a main part of the fabric to our wonderful club, thoughts are with all his family and friends, hopefully the boys win it Chas today..."

Ex-Spurs striker and current Match of the Day host Gary Lineker tweeted: "Terrible news. #RIP".

Many others are calling for a tribute at their game today against Brighton. One said: "Minute of silence before today's game is in order," with a Brighton fan responding: "Agreed from a Brighton fan RIP Chas"..

Others added: "Let's win the FA cup for Chas. COYS" and: "Please do something to honour him properly."

Someone else called for a silence at the team's next home game, which is on Wednesday against Watford.

RIP Chas.
