A 'Fully Immersive' Real Life Version Of Monopoly Is Coming This Year

The majority of board games are designed to just be a bit of harmless fun, however, Monopoly is not one of these games; Monopoly is designed to tear families apart.

A particularly savage game can create a very real and very sour atmosphere that lasts for days, and now the game is being made as real as its consequences.

A 'fully immersive' version of the game is due to launch later this year and will bring to life many of the key elements of the board game. The attraction will give players the chance to walk through themed rooms, with interactive technology and holograms helping to create a Bank, Water Works, Electric Company, Train Station, Title Deeds and Chance cards.

There's also a fake jail cell you can land yourself in, though admittedly it's been possible to experience the 'real thing' in this sense for centuries. In fact, it could be argued that a real life version of Monopoly already exists - it's called capitalism.

However, don't expect to find Trafalgar Square, Bond Street or Mayfair at the Monopoly Dreams theme park, as it is opening Hong Kong. Consequently, the locations will be taken from the Hong Kong version of the board game, and more fittingly still, the theme park will be located at The Peak, which is the most expensive tile in their edition of the game.

Beyond the normal features of the game, there will also be some kind of murder mystery style sub plot, whereby a mysterious villain will try to steal one of Mr Monopoly's diamonds from the residence and players will be tasked with thwarting the plot.

Mr Casey Collins, General Manager of Entertainment & Licensing at Hasbro - the company that own Monopoly - said the theme park would be 'wonderfully memorable' for tourists.

He said: "Our exciting partnership with Monopoly Dreams allows Hasbro to further extend the reach of Monopoly to location based entertainment sector and provide families and tourists with wonderfully memorable and highly immersive entertainment experiences by stepping into the first, fully immersive Monopoly-themed entertainment attraction."

Mr Gary Chan, the Chief Operations Officer of Monopoly Dreams, said they hoped the attraction would draw new tourists to the area.

He said: "Having invested - a significant amount of resources to design and create Monopoly Dreams, we highly treasure the establishment of this project. We target to accommodate over 700,000 visitors.

"Not only are we dedicated to bringing immersive interactive experience for all generations of local Hong Kong, we are also endeavoured to offer a new destination for tourists."

There isn't an exact opening date for Monopoly Dreams yet, but it is scheduled to open some time later this year. So in the meantime, start putting some money in the bank for flights to Hong Kong.
