Two men who have been accused of raping a 17-year-old girl have been stripped naked and paraded through the street with their hands tied behind their backs.

The incident was filmed by locals with smartphones, with footage showing people slapping the men as they walked past with their heads hung.

The accused rapists had been led along the streets of Yingkiong - a town in the Upper Siang district of north-eastern India's Arunachal Pradesh state - having been entirely stripped of their clothes and left to walk in front of the local community, their hands also tied up behind their backs.

They were then reportedly handed over to local police.

"It seems the public did such a thing before handing the two to the police," Police Deputy Inspector General John Neihlaia said.

Neihlaia explained that the teenage victim had agreed to go out with one of the men after befriending him on social media. She claimed that she was then raped by him and three of his other friends.

All four are said to be in their early 20s.

According to Neihlaia, it was the girl's parents that filed a complaint, and her relatives and neighbours who actually caught two of the men.

He said: "The girl was dropped back at herhome at 2am. Her parents lodged a complaint with the police in the morning.

"Meanwhile, the victim's relatives andneighbours caught two of the accusedand handed them over to the police."

Police have since also launched a hunt for the other two men.

The incident is the latest of its kind in the state of Arunchal Pradesh, which has involved angry mobs fuelled by alleged sexual crimes - and have become so enraged that they have decided to take the law into their own hands.

Just last month, almost 1,000 people stormed a police station in Tezu. They then reportedly grabbed the two men accused of raping and murdering a five-year-old girl, before killing them in the town's marketplace.

The next day, another mob of nearly 900 people ransacked the local police station in Yingkiong (where the two men accused of raping the 17-year-old girl were also taken) in protest of a man - who had been accused of raping a five-year-old girl - being moved to another district of the state.

On another occasion, a mob paraded a man - who had allegedly raped an eight-year-old girl - through the town of Daporijo, before handing him over to the police.
