A massive billboard with the words 'Shoot A School Kid Only $29' has appeared near the Las Vegas Strip.

The shocking message was spotted by motorists using Interstate 15 near Spring Mountain Road in the early hours of Thursday morning, KTNV reported.

An activist group called INDECLINE has said it is responsible for vandalising the sign by adding the words 'school kid' to it.

According to its website INDECLINE is a collective made up of 'full-time rebels and activists', photographers, filmmakers and graffiti artists. The page stresses it is not an 'anarchist group', but that it aims to draw attention to 'social, ecological, and economical injustices'.

A video has been posted online, which shows someone pasting over part of the new sign with the new wording. The billboard was initially being used to advertise Battlefield Vegas - a shooting range.

Activists also added the words: "DEFEND LIVES REFORM LAWS" to the sign.

A spokesperson for the group told KTNV they vandalised the sign because of 'America's longstanding obsession with gun culture'.

On a post of the INDECLINE Instagram page, the group writes: "It's difficult to have a conversation these days about gun reform over the sound of AR-15's and the screams of the victims.

"We've reached a point in American culture where mass shootings, some involving children, are tolerable. INDECLINE doesn't typically align itself with political parties, but when our politicians align themselves with nefarious corporations like the NRA, who value unrestricted access to assault rifles over human life, it requires direct action.

"INDECLINE isn't anti-gun. Some of the members of this collective own guns. We're also not calling for the complete eradication of weapons.

"However, the least we can do, now that we understand the results of harboring 270 million guns in a single country, is acknowledge that we have a problem, ignore the irrelevant and thoroughly debunked claims that mental health disorders are to blame and focus on the issue at hand. There needs to be reform and it needs to happen now.

"The writing is on the wall and it's in the form of bullet holes. FUCK THE NRA. Love, #INDECLINE Fighting a tyrannical government with ACTION not assault rifles

The billboard was covered by 9am on Thursday and police say an investigation has been launched.
