Alfie Evans Has Passed Away

Alfie Evans, the 23-month-old toddler at the centre of a legal battle has died nearly a week after his life support was withdrawn - and his parents are 'heartbroken'.

Alfie tragically passed away in the early hours of Saturday morning, his father confirmed.

On Facebook he wrote: "My gladiator lay down his shield and gained his wings... absolutely heartbroken."

Now messages are flooding in from people sending their condolences to the family.

Doctors had removed Alfie's life-support following a High Court judge's ruling on Monday but he continued to live.

His parents said that the youngster had defied doctors' expectations and they took their case to the Court of Appeal, but the application to take him abroad was rejected.

Tom Evans, 21, and Kate James, 20, had fought to take their son to a foreign hospital for treatment for a degenerative medical condition, as reported by ITV.

Speaking outside Alder Hey Hospital, Tom said: "We got rejected yesterday to go to Italy unfortunately. We could take it further but would that be the right thing to do, would there be more criticism?"

Tom added that their lives had been 'turned upside down' by the 'intense focus' his case had received.

He said: "Our little family along with Alder Hey has become the centre of attention for many people around the world and it has meant we have not been able to live our lives as we would like."

Support for the toddler grew by the minute all over the globe. Earlier this week LADbible reported that Poland was the latest country to get behind the family when a group held a vigil in the city of Krakow.

The supporters gathered outside a building in the city where they left teddy bears, flowers and banners on the floor and walls.

The words 'Save Alfie Evans' were written out on pieces of paper and placed at the front. Blue balloons were hung up on lampposts and several candles were also lit.

RIP, Alfie.
