Reports are surfacing that one person has been killed and at least 20 people injured after a shooting broke out at an all-night cultural festival in Trenton, New Jersey.

The Trentonian reports that the shooting began around 2.45am at the 'Art All Night Trenton 2018' festival, a community cultural event that runs for 24 hours.

It is believed that 16 people were shot with four now in a critical condition. One of those injured is a 13-year-old boy.

Police have said they believe two suspects brought guns into the festival. One of them, a 33-year-old male, is now dead and the other is 'accounted for'.

Officers have also alluded to the possibility that there could be more shooters and multiple weapons have been recovered.

Trenton Police Lt Darren Zappley said multiple people were shot and taken to the hospital, where some are in surgery. He added: "It's very chaotic out here."

The event began Saturday afternoon and was scheduled to continue through the night and end Sunday afternoon. It typically draws thousands of people, according to the MailOnline.

The Mercer County's Prosecutors Office Homicide Task Force is taking over the investigation as there was an officer-involved shooting, officials said.

Angelo Nicolo, who lives in Trenton, spoke to Action News about what he witnessed.

He said: "All of a sudden, my brother goes to me, 'You hear that gunfire?' I go, 'It sounds like fireworks.' He said, 'No, that's gunfire.' Next thing you know, we turn around and everybody's running down the street. All hell broke loose.

"I saw two police officers escort a guy that got shot in the leg; they bandaged him up and whisked him away before the ambulance came here. It was pretty gnarly."

Franco Roberts told the Trentonian that he and his girlfriend had suspected something bad was happening because there were 'more people outside than in the warehouse' and no music was playing inside.

He continued: "There's usually a lot of noise and a lot of music but there was none of that. Someone told us they were shutting down the whole building. Then we turned around and saw people squaring up to fight."

At that point, gunshots rang out.

"I saw two punches and then heard several gunshots," Roberts said.

The 'Art All Night Trenton 2018' event showcased 1,500 pieces of local art, live murals, live art instructions and 60 plus musical acts performing on three stages.
