Australia Proposes Harsher Rules For Foreign-Born Criminals  

Australia will introduce tougher rules for foreign-born criminals, if a new bill is approved.

The draft bill proposes that anyone convicted of a crime which is punishable by at a minimum of two years jail-time could have their visa cancelled and be kicked out the country, even if they didn't spend two years - or any time - in prison.

Offences which would be covered by the new laws include violent and sexual crimes, such as rape, murder and weapon possession.

Children who commit serious offences would also be included in the new laws.

Immigration Minister David Coleman told parliament: "This bill sends a clear and unequivocal message on behalf of the Australian community that entry or stay in Australia is a privilege granted only to those of good character.

"Like the Australian community, the government has no tolerance for non-citizens who are found to have committed these serious crimes."

Under current laws visas can be cancelled on 'bad character' grounds if a person is sentenced to at least one year in prison.
