Dodgeball is meant to be a fun, energetic sport where you run around a court in two teams belting the hell out of each other until one group reigns supreme.

Naturally, when adrenaline is pumping through your body, it's easy to get carried away and get really into winning.

However, for two students a simple game of dodgeball has ended in something much worse.

A 10-year-old boy was suspended from school because he threw a ball so hard at another child that he ended up concussing the poor lad.

Now, eyebrows were raised when it was just this kid that was suspended when there were loads of others playing the game at the time. However it doesn't stop there.

Months after the incident, the mother of the kid that allegedly threw the dodgeball found out that her son was being charged with aggravated assault in the 3rd Circuit Juvenile Court in Detroit, Michigan, according to CBS News.

Turns out, the kid that was hit in the head actually had a chronic brain stem infliction and shouldn't have been playing the game in the first place. As a result, it seems his family wants the ball thrower punished because the concussion could have been much worse.

The mum of the victim said this isn't the first time her son has been targeted and she didn't want it to happen again.

"My son was hit twice in the face with a ball previously due to this. The child apologised to my son and my son said 'Mom, it's OK, we're still going to be friends," she told WXYZ-TV.

Sadly, it was this most recent incident that was the straw that broke the camel's back.

The mum of the boy who's been charged with a pretty serious offence has started a fundraiser, hoping to gather some cash for a lawyer to fight the case.

Writing on Facebook, the mum said: "The ball that [my son] threw 'allegedly' resulted in the other student having a concussion. After meeting with the Principal about why [my son] was suspended while the other students who fully participated in this game were not, the Principal disclosed that the injured student has a pre-existing condition.

"Clearly, this student should not have been playing a physical contact sport.

"I'm just as shocked as those of you reading our story. Nonetheless, I am asking for your assistance in securing a Lawyer for [my son]."
