Canada Plans To Welcome One Million Immigrants In Next Three Years

Fancy emigrating to Canada? Or you not really a fan of stunning scenery, amazing wildlife and skiing?

Well, if you're open to the idea, and you're eligible, there could be for a spot for you.

The country's immigration minister, Ahmed Hussen, has announced plans to welcome up to 1,080,000 new permanent residents across the next three years.

The plans, announced in the 2018 Annual Report to Parliament on Immigration, indicates an upper target for 2021 of 370,000 - which represents an 84,000 increase on the number of immigrants granted permanent residency in 2017.

Mr Hussen - who first arrived in Canada as a Somali refugee - said the plan would continue to ensure that immigrants were welcomed in the country.

According to Business Insider, he said: "Immigrants and their descendants have made immeasurable contributions to Canada, and our future success depends on continuing to ensure they are welcomed and well-integrated."

The report indicates that a fifth of people who now live in Canada were not born in the country, with six million immigrants arriving since 1990.

Part of the reason the North American country welcomes so many immigrants is because of its ageing population. The average new arrival is relatively young, and many will be welcomed under job schemes, bolstering the country's work force.

The report reads: "Growing immigration levels, particularly in the Economic Class, will help us sustain our labour force, support economic growth and spur innovation.

"With an ageing population and low fertility rates, immigration plays an important role in ensuring that Canada's population and labour force continue to grow."

The country has taken in huge numbers of refugees in recent years and the report declares the country will continue to do so, aiming to take in between 43,000 and 64,500 refugees a year until 2021.

Canada's immigration policy has earned the country praise from the UN's High Commissioner for Refugees, Filippo Grandi, who lauded its extraordinary generosity in February.

He said: "It's a very virtuous circle that happens in this country and I would like to really commend and thank the Canadian people for their extraordinary generosity, openness and willingness to show solidarity towards those that are among the most deprived people in the world."

Meanwhile in the USA, President Donald Trump is threatening to declare a national emergency in order to secure funding to build a wall on the Mexican border.
