Charlie Gard Has Been Granted US Citizenship

Charlie Gard has been given US citizenship so he can fly to America for treatment, according to a Republican Congressman.

Jeff Fortenberry, Republican US Representative for Nebraska posted a tweet earlier today saying: "We just passed amendment that grants permanent resident status to #CharlieGard and family so Charlie can get the medical treatment he needs."

This isn't the first time the US has offered its help to the family of little Charlie. He was previously offered free treatment from a US hospital after President Donald Trump tweeted his assistance.

It is not now known if Charlie's parents, Connie Yates and Chris Gard, will be able to 'force' Great Ormond Street Hospital to release Charlie, so he can fly to the US for treatment.

According to the MailOnline, the children's hospital could stop Connie and Chris from taking the sick little boy to the US, if doctors believe that doing so will cause suffering to the child. In extreme circumstances, police could arrest the pair using the Powers of Protection legislation.

However, now Charlie has been granted US citizenship, it's unclear if police could enforce these laws.
