Reports are coming in that police have performed a controlled explosion near Westminster, under a mile away from the scene of Wednesday's terrorist attack that has so far claimed the lives of three people.

A senior BBC producer said London Metropolitan Police has confirmed the action on Birdcage Walk near Westminster Pride where Khalid Masood mowed down innocent pedestrians in a hired car before getting out and stabbing PC Keith Palmer.

A Metropolitan Police spokesman said: "Police are dealing with a suspect package in the area of Birdcage Walk. Officers remain on the scene."

The spokesman himself did not confirm whether a controlled explosion had taken place.

Sky News producer Pia Talbot claimed police told them they had carried out a controlled explosion within earshot of their crew.

A police spokesman said: "Officers were called at 7.40pm."

He said: "In this case we are dealing with a suspect package."
