On the 100th day of his presidency Donald Trump has opened about the early stages of his time in office, Reuters that he 'thought it would be easier' and admitting it was 'more work than in [his] previous life'.

At 70 years old, Donald Trump assumed public office for the first time in January, following a career as a property tycoon and reality television star.

He also discussed the constraining effect of the presidency on his life, saying: "I loved my previous life. I had so many things going. This is more work than in my previous life. I thought it would be easier.

"You're really into your own little cocoon, because you have such massive protection that you really can't go anywhere. I like to drive. I can't drive any more."

Since taking office Trump has taken a more aggressive approach to foreign relations, with an American military strike ordered against an airbase in Syria in retaliation for what US president called a 'horrible chemical weapons attack' in Idlib.

There have also been heightened tensions between the US and North Korea, with President Trump telling Reuters there was 'a chance' of America having a 'major, major, conflict with North Korea'.

But speaking about the country's dictator Kim Jung-un, he appeared to express sympathy for him and said 'he hoped' that the leader 'was rational'.

"He's 27 years old, his father dies, [and he] took over a regime, so say what you want but that's not easy, especially at that age," he said. "You know you have plenty of generals in there and plenty of other people that would like to do what he's doing.

"So I've said this before and I've, I'm just telling you, and I'm not giving him credit or not giving him credit. I'm just saying that's a very hard thing to do. As to whether or not he's rational, I have no opinion on it. I hope he's rational."

The first 100 days of a presidency have traditionally been a point for reflection on a president's initial achievements in office.

However Trump appeared to dismiss commentators attempting to assess his legacy at this point, calling the hundred day barometer 'an artificial barrier', and a 'ridiculous standard' on social media.
