If you were invited over for a meal at the White House, you'd probably expect to be served the very finest cuisine, or perhaps a Trump Steak.

But you'd be disappointed - unless you happen to love fast food, which you of course do.

The president of the United States was hosting dinner for the winners of the national college football championship, the Clemson Tigers. However, due to a partial government shutdown - stemming from Trump's refusal to accept a federal budget that does not include funds for a wall on the Mexican border - White House chefs are currently on mandatory leave.

As such, Trump opted to order in loads of Maccies, Burger King, Wendy's and pizza for the American footballers.

There was an element of splendour though, with all the Big Macs and chips served up on silver platters.

Speaking in the State Dining Room on Monday, the 45th President of the United States said he was going to ask his wife Melania to put on a salad, but he thought fast food would go down better.

He said: "We ordered American fast food. Paid for by me. Lots of hamburgers, lots of pizza, I think they'd like it better than anything we could give.

"We have some very large people that like eating, so I think we're gonna have a little fun.

"I had a choice: do we have no food for you, because we have a shutdown, or do we give you some little quick salads that the first lady will make along with the second lady, they'll make some salads. And I said, you guys aren't into salads.

"We have everything that I like, that you like. And I know no matter what we did, there's nothing that you could have that's better than that."

Indeed, The Donald couldn't choose his favourite fast food when pressed by a reporter.

He said: "If it's American, I like it. It's all American stuff."

No surprises there then.

Around 800,000 public sector workers are currently not being paid due to a deadlock over the federal budget. Some are on mandatory leave, while government employees such as air traffic controllers and Secret Service agents are working without pay.

Trump has requested $5.7 billion (£4.5 billion) in funding to help build a wall along the Mexican border, but Democrats have rejected the request.
