Drayton Manor has shut one of its popular rides, Splash Canyon, following reports of a person in the water on which the ride takes place.

Reports have since emerged of an 11-year-old girl being airlifted to hospital, and the park has been closed to any new visitors.

A spokesperson for Staffordshire Police confirmed that the girl was enjoying a day out with friends as part of a school trip.

The Staffordshire-based theme park opened Splash Canyon in 1993. It has a maximum ride capacity of 126 (21 boats of 6 people).

According to Drayton Manor's website, the ride prepares theme park goers to 'swerve around corners, splash through the waves, and get soaked as your boat is swept along our fast-flowing rapids'.

A spokesman for the theme park said: "The Splash Canyon ride has been closed following an incident this afternoon.

"Emergency services are at the scene and our fully trained park staff are assisting."

West Midlands Ambulance released a statement confirming it was called to reports of a 'patient in the water' at 14:18 this afternoon.

The statement read: "An ambulance, a senior paramedic officer, a paramedic area support officer, a rapid response paramedic, a community first responder and the Midlands Air Ambulance from Staffordshire were sent to the scene. The first resource was on scene within seven minutes."

Social media users have tweeted pictures of an ambulance arriving at the scene.

The Health and Safety Executive have also tweeted, and said: "HSE has been made aware of today's incident at Drayton Manor and making initial inquiries along with the emergency services."
