The complimentary in-flight drink is a dangerous game to play - one too many and you can find yourself being tackled by your fellow passengers because you've just tried to open the emergency exit.

Think I'm exaggerating? Well, that's exactly what happened to Russian doctor Vadim Bondar on a flight from Bangkok to Moscow.

According to reports, the anaesthetist had been drinking rum before becoming 'extremely aggressive' at 33,000 feet.

Shocking photographs have been released, showing Dr Bondar grappling with another traveller before being bound with belts to a seat in the crew's work station.

One passenger said: "He had two bottles of alcohol on him and at some point tried to open an emergency exit.

The doctor became involved in an altercation with another passenger.

"The crew and fellow passengers tried to calm him down, but he kept screaming and yelling.

"He cried when his arms and hands were bound. He kept sobbing and saying, 'My hands are tied, I can't breathe.'"

Dr Bondar claimed he had drunk rum in order to 'pass the time while the plane was going through turbulence'.

Speaking to the press, he said: "Perhaps I asked the flight attendants too often for water.

"I was told to return to my seat in a rude manner."

He then apologised to his fellow passengers for 'causing inconvenience'.

Dr Bondar says he had been drinking rum during turbulence.

The medic also told a Russian TV channel: "First of all, there were no demands for hijacking anything.

"The belt was pushing into my jugular vein and larynx which made breathing very hard."

Following the drunken altercation, Dr Bondar also claimed an 'unknown medication' was injected into him and around £1,000 was missing from his hand luggage upon landing in Moscow.

Vera Abanina, a spokeswoman for Russian airline Aeroflot, said: "The economy class passenger while quite obviously drunk was rudely violating public order.

"He was extremely aggressive, threatening and humiliating to the flight attendants.

He had to be retrained until the flight landed in Moscow.

"He screamed and did everything to create maximum discomfort to other flight passengers.

"Two bottles of alcohol were found and confiscated from the passenger. He did not react to verbal and written warnings from the crew.

"Other passengers and the crew acted together and fixed the rule breaker in a seat using whatever means they managed to find until the end of the flight."

Dr Bondar was handed to police on arrival in Moscow and said he would talk to lawyers about his treatment on the flight.

Alexander Bastrykin, head of the Russian Investigative Committee, has demanded a full probe into what happened on the flight.
