Actor Johnny Ortiz has been charged with attempted murder.

The 24-year-old, who starred in El Camino: A Breaking Bad Movie, appeared in court in Foltz Criminal Justice Center in Los Angeles today, alongside co-defendant Armando Miguel Navarro, 18.

Ortiz pleaded not guilty to the charges and is being held on a $1.1 million bail in a DTLA facility.

Navarro, who prosecutors claim fired shots at the man, is held on a bond of more than $2 million.

According to Deadline, Ortiz faces 25 years to life, if found guilty of the 'attempted wilful, deliberate, and premeditated attempted murder' charges.

Ortiz, who was arrested back in May, has been given a preliminary hearing for 22 September.

Deadline reports that the offence was 'carried out for the benefit of, at the direction of, and in association with a criminal street gang with the specific intent to promote, further and assist in criminal conduct by gang members'.

The alleged victim has been named as Brian Duke.

A GoFundMe page was set out, reportedly by Ortiz's family, to raise money for his bond, stating that he is 'in jail fighting for his case that he is innocent on'.

The campaign page - since deleted - read: "Johnny is everything to our family. Johnny does everything to help the community and the Hispanic community especially.

"Johnny has contributed to many non-profit organisations and community organisations. He is in jail fighting for his case that he is innocent on. We want our beloved family member back with us."

Ortiz starred as Busboy in El Camino and has also appeared in the ABC series American Crime and McFarland USA.
