“It's devastating. It's like reliving that day all over again, and Timmothy's father is devastated once again.”

The family of missing boy Timmothy Pitzen are devastated after a man came forward and pretended to be him.

He was found covered in bruises and told a passerby that he was a 14-year-old Timmothy, who disappeared in May 2011 aged six. However, the FBI conducted a DNA test, which found the 'teenager' was actually a 23-year-old man named Brian from Medina, Ohio.

Timmothy's aunt, Kara Jacobs, and his grandmother, Alana Anderson, have spoken out about the incident, saying they're 'devastated'.

Ms Jacobs has told reporters: "It's devastating. It's like reliving that day all over again, and Timmothy's father is devastated once again."

His grandmother Alana Anderson added: "It's been awful. We've been on tenterhooks, hopeful and frightened. It's just been exhausting.

"I feel so sorry for the young man who's obviously had a horrible time and felt the need to say he was somebody else.

"My prayer has always been that when [Tim] is old enough, he would find us if we couldn't find him."

Pitzen disappeared in May 2011, after his mother Amy Fry-Pitzen killed herself in a motel. When her body was found three days later, the boy was missing and, according to reports at the time, a note left by Fry-Pitzen claimed he was safe and being looked after, but ended, 'you'll never find him'.

On Wednesday, the teen attended a police station, where a report states: "Timmothy described the two kidnappers as two male, whites, body-builder type build.

"One had black curly hair, Mt. Dew shirt and jeans and has a spider web tattoo on his neck. The other was short in stature and had a snake tattoo on his arms."

Fast forward to this week, where the 23-year-old Brian pretended to be a 14-year-old, all grown up, Timmothy Pitzen. He was able to recount the youngster's dad's name as well as date of birth, leading many to think it was Timm.

However, it was all unravelled when he did a DNA test, which obviously revealed his lie.

In a statement prior to the test, officers said: "We've probably had thousands of tips of him popping up in different areas. We have no idea what we're driving down there for.

"It could be Pitzen. It could be a hoax."

The Louisville department of the FBI has released a tweet saying: "FBI Louisville, FBI Cincinnati, Aurora Police Illinois, Newport PD, Cincinnati Police Department, and HCSO have been conducting a missing person investigation. DNA results have been returned indicating the person in question is not Timmothy Pitzen.

"A local investigation continues into this person's true identity. To be clear, law enforcement has not and will not forget Timmothy, and we hope to one day reunite him with his family. Unfortunately, that day will not be today."
