Jay Maynor has been sentenced to 40 years in prison for killing Raymond Earl Brooks in 2014, reports The Sun.

He pleaded guilty to shooting the man dead in November 2016 so that his daughter, Julia, who had been sexually abused by Brooks between the ages of four and nine, didn't have to testify in court and relive the awful experience.

The registered sex offender was convicted in 2002 and spent 27 months in jail. But that wasn't enough for Maynor, who shot him in an act of revenge.

Previously, Maynor has also shot at an abusive ex-boyfriend of Julia's in a shop. The man was unharmed but he was charged with attempted manslaughter and sentenced to 20 years in jail.

Julia has told AI.com: "My father was protecting me, like a father should do. He is an amazing father - actually the best. He loves us so much."

People are outraged that Maynor will spend the next 40 years of his life in prison. A petition has been launched to pardon the dad, which needs just over 1,000 more signatures to reach its goal of 7,500 before it gets to be delivered to the Governor of Alabama in The States.

The petition states: "Jay Maynor has been sentenced to 40 years in prison for killing his daughter's rapist. Jay is not a threat to society. He is a good man. We would like to see him set free or at minimum a lesser sentence."

Julia is heartbroken by the whole ordeal. The 24-year-old mum of three is suffering from PTSD and is currently divorcing her husband.
