The first image of a mum who was 'cut in half' by a hospital lift just after giving birth has been released.

Twenty-six-year-old Rocio Cortes Nunez had just had a C-section to help deliver her third child when the accident happened.

She was being transferred to the maternity unit on the third floor after waking up from surgery at around 14:30 on Sunday.

Her new-born baby was with her when the incident happened at the Valme Hospital in Seville, but the infant survived the ordeal.

Her family now 'want answers' as to why the lift operated in such manner.

David Gaspar, Nunez's brother-in-law, said: "It's incredible. We still can't believe what's happened. Something has to happen. This cannot go unpunished."

It is understood that her head was trapped between the lift frame and roof as it started moving upwards with her feet left dangling in the lift shift.

A hospital porter had gone to change lifts after the doors had closed twice and nothing had happened, leaving Nunez inside the original lift.

However, as it began to move he failed to pull the stretcher out in time, leaving Nunez stranded.

The regional health minister Marina Alvarez called the accident 'quick, unusual, and tragic'.

Her husband, Jose Gaspar, told ABC: "This cannot end like this. This time it has been Rocio but tomorrow it could be another person. I'm a total wreck."

Her mum, Carmen, added: "My heart missed a beat. I asked after my daughter but no-one was telling me anything.

"She had given birth at 11 in the morning so I went to the information desk.

"They told me there a young girl had died and then confirmed it was my daughter. What a cruel death she suffered."

The lift had passed all its checks as recently as August 12, and a full investigation has now been launched.

A mechanical failure is likely to have caused the fault, with firefighters called immediately to help rescue her body.

The autopsy is expected to take place on Monday.

As well as her new-born baby, Nunez also leaves behind two other children aged between three and four.
