McDonald’s Is Removing Cheeseburgers From US Happy Meals To Make Them Healthier

You'll still be able to have the classic burger in the meal, but the company wants to promote other healthier options

Growing up, a Happy Meal was a standard part of life.

If there was a big movie or TV show being released, that meant the cheap meal became even happier as there would often be a plush toy or collectible in every box. The simple chips, cheeseburger and small drink have been able to satisfy many young hungry mouths since its debut in the 1970s.

But it appears this staple menu option is going to be changed in America.

In a bid to make the meal healthier, the multi-national corporation will be removing the famed cheeseburger and chocolate milk.

The move will cut down the meal's calories, sodium, saturated fat and sugar, which, I guess, is alright. While it will be removed as the standard option, it's worth noting that you can still ask your lovely employee at the cash register to include the burger or flavoured milk.

The change will come into effect by June.

McDonald's says there has been a 14 percent drop in the orders for soft drinks since they dropped them from the menu four years ago. Other options available instead of fizzy drinks and fries include apple slices, juice, vegetables and water bottles.

Sky News says those promotional toys could also soon be a thing of the past, with Maccies instead opting to offer books as an alternative.

San Francisco introduced a law in 2010 that required fast food restaurants to have meals at 600 calories or less and 640 milligrams of sodium or less before it could offer a promotional toy. McDonald's America reportedly wants to have at least half the drive-thrus around the country to reflect that dietary limit by 2022.

Chile has also banned toys from being sold with the meal in a bid to curb childhood obesity.

These alterations have already introduced in the UK menu, with a spokesperson telling Sky News: "We take our responsibility to families very seriously and in the UK we have, for a long time, been committed to evolving our Happy Meal menu to keep in step with what parents want."

While some people will cry that this is a negative thing, it's really not. You can still get your classic Happy Meal with the burger, coke and fries; it just won't be as visible as it used to be.
