Distressing footage showing a bull collapsing in the street during a Spanish bull-running event has been shared online, leading to many fresh calls for an end to blood sports.

The shocking clip, which was recorded at the Bou Al Carrerevent in the town of Vila-Real, the bull falls to the ground and begins repeatedly smacking its head against the ground.

A crowd of onlookers stop to watch the bull, as it's front legs buckle and it crashes to the ground. Lying on its side the poor animal then begins to hit its head into the ground as it attempts to get up again.

Two of those watching attempt to help the bull back on to its feet, but it still appears to be unsteady and hunched forward.

Enrique Zaldivar, president of the Association of Vets for the Abolition of Bullfighting and Animal Mistreatment (AVATMA) said: "They are unpleasant images that possibly indicate an injury to the animal's central nervous system. The bull is suffering from motor dis-coordination that makes it fall repeatedly.

"It could have suffered skull trauma by hitting its head against an obstacle. Another less plausible hypothesis is that the symptoms of neurological alteration could be due to a doping overdose, a normal practice in bull runs, to weaken the bull."

After the footage appeared online a number of people spoke out to blast the 'disgusting' sport, with one commenting to say: "Those who enjoy this are worse than animals, even animals have feeling and sensitivity," another called those who enjoy such activities a 'brainless bunch'.

One of the groups who posted the video to social media, Bullfighting Is Violence (TEV), are planning are demonstration in Madrid's Puerta del Sol square on 27 May against animal violence in Spain.

The group estimates 20,000 bulls are killed in bullfighting and bull runs in Spain every year.

It is unclear if this bull was killed during the festival.

At a Spanish bull-running event last month, a man died after being gored.

Video footage of the incident, which happened at the Toro del Aleluya in Arcos de la Frontera, Andalusia, shows the man being cornered by the bull while onlookers try and get its attention to encourage it to leave the man alone.

Despite his attempts to out manoeuvre it, the bull knocks the man off his feet and begins to toss him around.

Another man was also injured and both were rushed into hospital, however one of the men died of his injuries.
