A former Marine has been captured running to a burning building and catching a baby being thrown from a window.

A blaze broke out in Anderson, South Carolina, and emergency services were quick on the scene, including seven fire trucks. As firefighters worked to put out the flames, other officers had the delicate task of saving anyone still inside.

That's when this mystery man came to the rescue.

He ran up to the base of the building, with the fire raging just metres away, and held out his arms to a mum on the second floor. After a few seconds of hesitation, the woman drops the 11-month-old baby into the former Marine and he catches it without a hitch.

Fox News says the mum noticed thick black smoke coming from her doorway as the fire started to take hold. Knowing she wouldn't be able to leave through her normal exit, she opted for the window.

She told the news station that making the decision to toss the baby was the most difficult and terrifying she's ever had to make. While the baby suffered bruises and scratches, he was okay.

Sadly, it seems as though we'll never get to know who the civilian superhero is as he declined to comment when approached by news crews on the scene.

Fox said: "The man...didn't want any praise for the incident, however, one firefighter shook his hand and thanked him." Not all heroes wear capes.

It's reminiscent of the man dubbed the French Spider-Man after he scaled several floors of a building in seconds to save a dangling baby.

Mamoudou Gassama, 22, showed off some serious upper body strength in his race to reach the kid, who was hanging from a balcony just out of reach of the neighbours.

Fire crews arrived at the scene at the weekend to find that their work had already been done for them. To reward his heroism, French President Emmanuel Macron invited him to the Elysee Palace and not only gave him a medal for bravery but was also made an official citizen of the country.

The president shared photos of their meeting at the palace on his Facebook page, saying that the 'Paris fire brigade would be keen to welcome him to their ranks'.

The Malian-born immigrant eventually landed a 10-month internship as a firefighter with Paris' fire and rescue service which is expected to pay around €600 (£525/$697) each month.
