Going on a road trip is a bloody awesome thing to do with your mates - as long as it's legal.

Sadly for four young Aussie kids, they're finding out the hard way that you can't just grab your mum or dad's car and drive around until your heart's content.

On Saturday night, a 14-year-old boy, two 13-year-olds and a 10-year-old girl packed one of their parent's four-wheel-drives with some fishing rods and set off on a journey that would span two states.

One of the kids left a note to their parents saying they were leaving and the quartet jumped in the 2004 Nissan Patrol and drove an astounding 924km from their home town of Gracemere, near Rockhampton, Queensland to Grafton in New South Wales.

The trip would take an average driver a little more than 10 hours, however it's not clear how long it took the group.

Channel 7 says the group was allegedly involved in a petrol theft incident

Queensland Police have released a statement saying: "The four missing children subject to an urgent appeal for public assistance yesterday afternoon, have been located safe in Grafton, NSW.

"It was believed the vehicle had travelled across the border to New South Wales and had been sighted near Glen Innes early yesterday afternoon.

"The media and public are thanked for their assistance. Investigations into the matter are ongoing."

While we're certainly not condoning the alleged theft of petrol, it takes pretty big balls to decide to drive across two states with a few of your underage mates.

No doubt they will be grounded for a very long time after their parents hear how far they went.
