An ice-cold newborn baby was found in the arms of its homeless mother in a bus stop in Portland a week ago.

A man has said he was waiting at the bus stop when a woman came up to him and opened her jacket to reveal a freezing cold baby. An ambulance was called and paramedics described the baby as 'ice cold'.

Sergeant Pete Simpson said both mother and baby were rushed to hospital and the doctors tried to save the newborn, but were unsuccessful, reports Metro.

The mother told the police she was pregnant by 'immaculate conception' and it quickly became clear that she suffered from mental health problems.

It's thought that the baby was born only a few hours before it was found, at a nearby homeless settlement. Initially, doctors disagreed on whether or not it was a stillborn or died of the freezing temperatures in Portland.
