Pakistan has been hit with a killer heatwave with temperatures soaring to 42C.

Dozens of people are feared to have died in Karachi, with double the usual number of bodies arriving at the city's morgues.

Faisal Edhi from the Edhi Foundation, which oversees a number of public health projects, told the MailOnline: "We have received 180 dead bodies in the last four days which is more than double of what we receive normally.

"The majority of these were sudden deaths because of the heatwave as claimed by their relatives, which we cannot independently verify."

Speaking to CNN, Edhi said 65 people have died due to the sweltering temperatures in the past few days.

One man told AFP his brother died after collapsing at work, he said the doctors told him his brother died of heat stroke.

However, the government in Sindh province disputed this estimate, with the director of the Provincial Disaster Management Authority, Muhammad Ali Shaikh, saying: "Only one casualty has been reported due to heat stroke so far."

He also advised people to stay indoors to avoid the heat, as authorities urge people to keep hydrated. The city has also been hit with power outages, some lasting up to nine hours, according to Edhi.

Health minister of Sindh province, Fazlullah Pechuho, told the Dawn newspaper: "I categorically reject that people have died due to heatstroke in Karachi."

According to the Pakistan Meteorological department the city of Karachi will experience 'hot to very hot weather' for the next two or three days, with highs of 44C.

The heatwave coincides with Ramadan, when most Muslims will not eat or drink during daylight hours.
