An adorable Jack Russell has been hailed as a hero after he discovered a newborn baby dumped in some bushes.

Macho began tugging at his lead in an attempt to drag his owner off the path and into the undergrowth, while they were out for a walk in a park in St Petersburg, Russia.

It's thought that little Macho had heard the baby whimpering and wanted to go over to investigate and it's fortunate he did, because medics reckon the little girl was just 'minutes away from death' when the dog and owner found her.

The tiny baby was reportedly too weak to cry and was suffering from hypothermia - when she was found she had only a t-shirt wrapped around her.

The elderly dog owner who found the baby told local media: "I felt my heart pounding when I saw the baby.

"She was waving her little legs and arms in the air, but she was silent. As doctors told me later, she must have been crying for hours."

Macho found the baby, who was suffering from severe hypothermia.

The baby weighed just five pounds and was rushed to hospital 'just in time to save her', according to doctors. Once checked by medics, the baby was found to have 'severe hypothermia' and a lack of oxygen.

A spokesperson from the Russian National Guard said: "It is very unlikely she would have been noticed if not for Macho.

"This smart dog pulled his owner - very much against his will - towards a deserted area of the park.

"Deep in the bushes the man saw a little something wrapped in a t-shirt. This was the baby girl, who by then was too weak to cry."

Five days on, medical staff say the baby is 'extremely robust' and they're confident she will survive.

One nurse said: "She is a fighter."

Cops in Russia have now begun a search for the little girl's mum, who they think was the most likely person to have abandoned her in the park.

"Our hearts ache for the baby and for her mother," a nurse said.

Medics are confident the little girl will make a full recovery.

"Whatever forced the mother to abandon her baby minutes after birth has to be changed. We can't have situations like this."

According to local reports, the dog could be due to get an award for rescuing the baby.

However, his proud owner - who didn't want to be named - is still left horrified by his dog's discovery.

"The whole story made me feel very upset," he told a reporter.
